| Doctor's Appointment |
[18 Jul 2009|01:30pm] |
. Toft M.D. @ 1:30 pm
ADDENDUM: Aside from the rather long wait, it went all right. I was sitting in the room for about 45 minutes and before that I was waiting to be called for another 30 minutes. It wasn't Dr. Toft I saw, but another lady doctor, I believe.
All I was there for was a follow-up on medication; I was basically figuring out whether I still needed to take antibiotics for my skin. She told me to take a break since it had been a while and I concurred, but she wrote me a lengthy prescription for the same medication in case I started breaking out again and wanted to resume taking it as well as a topical cream. I ended up scheduling a medispa appointment too, since I haven't been for a derm or chemical peel in 2-3 months (due to being busy and lack of funds).
You know, I'd been mentioning a lot things lately relating to nursing, and as I was attending my appointment, I found myself paying particular attention to the nurse who was taking care of the usual procedures before the meet with the doctor. I noticed this time there was no greeting of any kind, besides calling my name to bring me in. It was straight to the questions, silently checking blood pressure, and palpating the radial pulse without any kind of announcement. I didn't mind, "business as usual in the office" was the tone I got and complied. I wouldn't label it a bad experience at all. But this did make me contrast other experiences with nurses or any other profession in general; those who have the energy/personality/whatever to do that little extra - whether it be a smile, a greeting, a little chitchat - that makes you feel a bit more welcome or at ease. It can go a long way.

Apocalyptica: "Epilogue (Relief)" |
] |
I called several schools to ask about high school records and what they required from them according to each college's entrance specs. Then I rang up Blue Cross to figure out what the deal was with no exam coverage. The person who answered was quite helpful and informed me that they do reimburse me $50 for examinations, I just have to mail a claim. (Barely made a dent in helping me and mom save, but it was something.) Community Vision expanded on the details, saying I would be asking for an itemized statement.
I also went through with the Dell purchase! I will have a Studio 14z laptop hopefully by next month. Anytime earlier would be great too.
It's just Mom, Uncle, and I at the house at the moment. Charm and Sanna went to the apartment in Long Beach. According to FB, she had some business there to take care of tomorrow. Auntie's at work as per usual, I'm glad she'll be having several weeks vacation soon, so she can relax some.
Later in the day, I was looking over Saunders PRN again and back in mom's room, trying out the stethoscope and sphygmomanometer.
{Jess presses stethoscope to abdominal quadrants}
Mom: Can you hear the peristalsis? XD Jess: I can hear the peristalsis. XDDD
*Peristalsis = The contraction of tubular structures, like intestines, which cause bubbling or gurgling sounds when you listen to the stomach. I have this habit of listening to Joe's all the time, ahaha.

I've recently dumped a bunch of new songs into my music archive post. Most of the artists I happened upon watching Smallville, while others were found traipsing about the 'net. To the archive for sound samples!

. AVC @ 12:15 pm
ADDENDUM: Well, that was fast. It took a little less than half an hour to get a educational plan all sorted and copied. I'm supposed to attach this to my application along with all college transcripts, even one from AVC. {grumbles} I think I'm going to have to get one or two more copies from both colleges because of that and the fact that the counselor had to open one to evaluate my other courses.
I'm set except for waiting on transcripts from them, and apparently, I have to take an ethics class. Good news is I can take it any time from anywhere as long as it is equivalent to their class. And if I get accepted elsewhere, I may not have to take it at all.
After the appointment and mailing a bill for Uncle, I decided to take a long detour to Barnes & Noble to look over some nursing books. Not that I have been in complete vegetation mode during summer, but I think it would be a useful thing to do. I actually feel game.

...or "Pocket Reference for Nurses." =P
It's an old book of mom's. I started reading it in her room, while occasionally asking about terms and procedures. One of the things that delighted me, unsurprisingly enough, was the reincarnation of words into "medical" terms.
For example: "Palpate for the patient's pulse." "Auscultate parts of the thorax to assess the patient's respiratory condition."
Instead of: "Feel for the patient's pulse." "Listen to parts of the chest to figure out what's up with his breathing."
I know I'm probably going to get lost in the language of the discipline at first, but hey, at least I find it interesting; and I certainly appreciate how it lends to the professionalism of the job.

. Community Vision Optometric Center @ 9 pm
My last appointment was back in 2006? Oops. My right eye/contact has been bothering me especially as of late and since I broke my glasses a few days ago - doubly good time to see the optometrist! The amount my Anthem Blue Cross insurance covered was laughable though. The total came out to $655. ...I know. I was told that I only have coverage for materials and no examination benefits. I'll call them later today and see how much it is to get full services.
Mom and I ate at Wendy's after before heading back home. I think I will try again for a car wash when it gets cooler this evening.

Jess: Did the series at some points get farcical to you? 'Cause for Harimoto - it was like "I just lost the important thing to me... I must never stop racing again!" >>;;; Joe: oh yah Joe: totally Joe: =P Joe: esp. the last episode
I'm liking the car aspect of it all, I really am. But, seriously? ...♥ had this to say though, and I can see some of that even if I'm only 7 episodes deep right now. Maybe I just need some time to feel more bonded to the characters and their lives. I feel like I'm not as invested in anyone as much as I think I should be. Attachment to the main character Akio and the Devil Z is there for me, but it's in small, slow doses.
Joe: the thing i appreciate about the series is... Joe: although it is centered around the cars, it also uses the cars as a very powerful...magnifying glass? i want to say...it focuses on the human dynamic of development and emotion but in the context of automotive enthusiasm Joe: how does...a car enthusiast find meaning? as a: pure enthusiast, a professional, a family man, a guy who works on them? etc etc etc Joe: and it also doesn't belittle anyone for their choices...it simply accepts them for who they are Joe: remarkable
And fancy that, there's a new live action movie coming out this summer. [trailer]

Look + Ambiance: Modern + Trendy Music: plenty of Journey and upbeat rock Price: $$$ / $$$$$ Espresso: Black Cat Classic = 4.0 / 5.0 Coffee: Sulawesi Toarco = 3.5 / 5.0; Kenya = 4.2 / 5.0 Tea: Organic Emerald Spring (Green Tea) = 3.8 / 5.0
Overall, it was a nice place to check out. It was well-lit and clean. Beverages - the coffee, specifically - may have been a bit overrated and overpriced. The Sulawesi was disappointing. However, a redeeming cup of Kenya Joe bought convinced us to return for second visit. =]

| Two Parties |
[27 Dec 2008|08:32pm] |
. Cy's Birthday . Black & White Christmas Party hosted by Jeff & Heshan
Today was Cyrus' 26th birthday. Les and I went to Coldstone's to buy an ice cream cake. She bought him a small round of cookies and mint. Instead of the size that they had purchased for my birthday, Les went with a smaller one since we're leaving for Vegas tomorrow. We went to Target as well. She wanted to find something small to give him on the day of even though she would get something better when they went back to London. We decided to settle on cards; I bought one as a gift from the rest of the family. It was a song card that you open up and a song plays. Haha, Les told me he started jogging/dancing when it started playing (Survivor's "The Eye of the Tiger").
I think the couple had bought Bailey's Irish Creme when they went grocery shopping earlier during their stay. We had that mixed with milk and it complemented the cake nicely. =3
Today is also the traditional Christmas party that Joe's friends started a few years back. I know he's really bummed that I had to cancel because of Vegas. I did want to go this year too. Last year he asked me, but that was before we began dating, and although I cared about him in a friendly way, I didn't feel completely comfortable going then. It would've been nice, but to come in as the girl he had been severely crushing on... I think I would've felt very on the spot. I probably would feel similarly now anyhow as his first girlfriend, but for some reason, that's something I don't mind handling. I guess because it's going to be part of our lives together. We're going to have to start somewhere.
